The big news this quarter – alongside the activation of 400Gbps ports on VIC-IX – is the release of the network automation features in the IAA Member Portal. With this release, Members are now in full control of their services and are able to turn services off and on at will, or simply update a MAC address on a port. In most cases the changes take a mere TWO minutes to be activated, which all up is an amazing achievement of the team. Of course, they’re not resting on their laurels but building even more features into the pipeline.

We’re also about to change the way in which we bill for our services. To date, we have been issuing bills for services active in the following month, but from July onwards we’ll be billing for the same month the bill is issued. As part of the change over, this means we will be sending $0 bills in June, as the bill for June was sent in May and Members will have already paid for those services. From July, we will be sending July’s bill on 1 July, August’s bill on 1 August, September’s bill on 1 September and so on. We’re doing this to make things simpler for everyone as it reduces the rework and confusion when services change over the month. With network automation you have more flexibility to turn things up and down, and now your invoices will also reflect your changes sooner.

We’ve also been working hard to help all our Members be compliant with the new DFSV Standard, by issuing policy templates and procedures, and holding well-attended briefings. We’ll soon round all this out with training sessions, meaning our Members and partners from the WISPAU are all nicely compliant. Feedback has been tremendous on this material and given the mountain of compliance work we all have to do to keep running these days we will make sure we continue to produce templates and guides for our Members’ use (check out this issue’s info on the new mandatory Outage Register obligation). We’ll also keep the pressure on the various regulators to lighten the load and help to make your obligations simpler and clearer.

Our events last quarter have also been well attended, fun and interesting; with one at the NBN Discovery Centre and another at the National Communication Museum, the latter marking 15yrs of VIC-IX. We also presented at NZNOG, ran IAASysters NZ, and helped out with the NZIX tenth anniversary event. We hope you can make our next Member event in Brisbane!

Happy peering!

Narelle

Question from the desk

Each newsletter, I will pose a question to Members, because your perspective is important. Please email me with your thoughts and opinions. Over to you:

In the era of risk compliance – which model have you chosen to certify with, and why?

We’re looking at the Essential Eight model, for its simplicity. What about you?

Get your 400Gbps ports on VIC-IX
With shiny new hardware now in place, VIC-IX has been upgraded to support 400Gbps. This is a key step in supporting ongoing growth in traffic volumes and high-capacity Member requirements.

WA-IX: router upgrade and Steam cache refresh
The Tech Team are heading to Perth this month to upgrade the WA-IX router and refresh the Steam cache. While not the most glamorous work on the roadmap, it’s the kind of routine investment that keeps performance solid and the network ready for what’s next.

Billing period changes
We’re updating how services are billed. Invoices for fixed services are now issued for the month in which you’re using them. Towards the end of the year, we will also be making changes to how volume-based services are billed, moving to arrears to allow for upgrades and downgrades within each monthly cycle. Affected Members will receive advanced notice of these changes and no action is required at this stage. These updates will set the foundation for Cloud Connect and future contracted service arrangements.

Have you tried IAA’s Member Portal Automation yet?

Self-service provisioning is now live. Most changes done in under two minutes, 24/7.

If you haven’t already, be sure to log in to the IAA Member Portal now and try for yourself:

Our first Night at the Museum kicked off in Sydney at the NBN Discovery Centre in March, taking Members behind the scenes of the technology and infrastructure that keeps Australia connected.

Melbourne followed last week at the National Communication Museum in Hawthorn, where we toured the history of communications from early telephony to today’s digital networks. This event also marked 15 years of VIC-IX and Members celebrated in style.

The photos tell the story better than we can, but these evenings have been something special.

Brisbane is closing out the series, soon, so be sure to register.

Applications to join IAASysters Brisbane 2026 are now closed. We had a fantastic response and we’ll be announcing successful applicants soon – watch this space.

In the meantime, Brisbane is shaping up to be a big one. The IAASysters Workshop runs on 2 September 2026, with the full AusNOG Conference following on 3-4 September.

There’s still an opportunity to get your organisation’s name alongside this program as a sponsor.

IAASysters NZ 2026 took place in March in Christchurch. It was another inspiring and intense three days.

Our 2026 cohort did not disappoint. The collaboration and engagement throughout the Workshop was something to behold. Then it was on to the full NZNOG conference, for more learning and networking. By the final day, lifelong connections had been forged. We’re excited to stay in touch and follow our latest cohort though their successful careers in tech.

Plans are already underway for next year’s event, so if you have colleagues in New Zealand who may benefit from the program, be sure to let them know!

A huge thank you to our speakers Cheryl Alderman, Aleisha Amohia, Alexia Hilbertidou, and Sally Foley-Lewis.

Thanks also to our sponsors whose support makes this program possible.

IAA Brisbane is next. See above for details.

The Summit returns for its 25th edition on 2–3 June at the Fullerton Hotel, Martin Place, Sydney with a pre-summit forum on 1 June.

IAA CEO, Narelle Clark, will be on stage at the pre-summit “Restoring Telecom Reputation” forum, joining Australia’s senior telco leaders to examine how the sector can strengthen public confidence amid heightened regulatory, political, and consumer scrutiny.

IAA is also a Lightning Talk Sponsor at this year’s Summit, with Narelle taking the stage once again on day two, as part of the sponsored session.

Don’t miss it.

The IAA Team joined them in a Casino Royale evening on the 38th floor of the voco Auckland City Centre, for black tie, casino tables, and champagne. Ten years of member-based peering, and not a bad way to mark it.
Congratulations NZIX and here’s to the next ten!

The NZNOG community descended on Christchurch in March for what turned out to be their biggest conference yet, with a record 260 attendees.

IAASysters NZ 2026 preceded the main conference, with our cohort diving straight into the Workshop before joining the broader event. The IAA Team represented with our Technical Lead delivering our annual NZIX update.

Program Manager, Tanzia Hewer, assisted the NZIX team with their booth. This year NZIX were back with the hoodies, and enough giveaways to keep the conference floor talking.

The conference dinner at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand was a highlight. Aircraft overhead, three courses, and the kind of company that makes NZNOG one of the industry’s most valued gatherings.

NZNOG 2026 was an outstanding success by every measure.

See you in 2027!
