Trainee Network Engineer
Ready to build the future of internet connectivity? Join us as a Trainee Network Engineer to gain hands-on experience, mentorship, and foundational skills in networking.
Working at an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) operator is one of the most exciting ways to begin a career in networking. Rather than managing a single enterprise network, you will work at the very intersection of the internet, helping ISPs, content delivery networks (CDNs), and cloud providers peer and exchange traffic.
About the role
Are you fascinated by how data travels across Australia’s high-capacity networks? As a Trainee Network Engineer, you will join a community of like-minded people in our non-profit industry association, helping build a better internet for all Australians by running the infrastructure that connects internet networks together.
Working alongside senior network engineers, you will maintain, monitor, and improve our high-capacity peering infrastructure. This is a hands-on, highly collaborative entry-level position designed to take your theoretical networking knowledge and apply it to real-world, carrier-grade infrastructure.
What you will do
- Network Monitoring and Triage: Monitor the health of our exchange switching fabric, tracking traffic spikes, port errors, and peering session states.
- Core Configuration and Maintenance: With automated service delivery now handling the provisioning of our member ports, you will focus on assisting members with their configuration. and maintaining the core network and associated infrastructure, from switches through to routers and server clusters, keeping the platform stable, secure, and performant.
- Peering Support: Help configure and troubleshoot BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) sessions and peering filters for members. This includes communicating directly with customers through our ticketing and phone systems, assisting new and existing members with their enquiries, and delivering a consistently high standard of service.
- Data Centre Operations: Join senior engineers on-site at major data centres to assist with physical racking, migrations, cabling (fibre optics), and cross-connect patching.
- Documentation: Maintain and improve our internal wiki information store for infrastructure documentation including processes and procedures.
What we are looking for
- Problem-Solving Mindset: Great troubleshooting instincts and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly.
- Communication and Client Service: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a genuine commitment to outstanding client service when supporting our members.
- Foundational Knowledge: A solid grasp of the TCP/IP suite, routing versus switching, and basic command-line ability (Linux/Unix-like).
- Enthusiasm for Infrastructure: A strong desire to learn how global routing, IP transit, and peering work.
- Relevant Studies: Currently studying or recently graduated with a degree or diploma in Information Technology, Network Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (CCNA-level knowledge is a major plus). Demonstrable equivalent knowledge or experience will also be actively considered.

Eligibility and requirements
- Citizenship or Permanent Resident: You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to be eligible for this position.
- Australian Police Check: As we work on critical infrastructure, the successful candidate will be required to complete an Australian National Police Check prior to commencement. This check will be arranged and paid for by us.
