This year we launched our IAASysters@AusNOG program. This program is based on the international systers.org and systers@IETF programs and offers ten sponsored attendees the opportunity to participate in both the Australian Network Operators Group (AusNOG) conference and our IAASysters@AusNOG workshop.

We are passionate about cultivating a more inclusive Internet industry and have created the IAASysters@AusNOG program to support and enable women to access the valuable technical content and business networking opportunities that come from the AusNOG conference.

Sponsored attendees will receive:

  • Economy airfares to Sydney and three nights accommodation for interstate participants
  • Admission to the AusNOG conference – provided by AusNOG (December 8-9)
  • Admission to the IAASysters@AusNOG workshop (December 7)

Another fantastic event done and dusted in 2021. During this joint event with the Australian Computer Society (ACS), our very own, Narelle Clark, took us on a journey through all things Internet, guided by the theme ‘how it started and how it’s going.’ Beginning with a brief introduction of IAA, we heard about technology, architecture, service, regulatory and social issues, finishing off with some of the important lessons learnt from 2020.  This event is one not to be missed!

If you weren’t able to attend, don’t worry, we have you covered! You can catch the recorded live stream on our Facebook page or Youtube channel.

To keep informed about more fantastic IAA events, stay connected with us on our social media channels  (Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter) and be sure to keep an eye on our newsletters and member emails.

Guest speaker Jari Arkko of Ericsson research spoke at our 2020 AGM. Jari’s presentation Evolving the Internet through COVID-19 and Beyond looked at how the Internet has been coping during these periods of lockdown, other changes brought about by the pandemic, and what lessons can be learned from these into the future.

Each year Women in Technology WA (WiTWA) hosts the Tech [+] Awards as a way to shine a light on the diversity of women who work in tech roles and organisations in Western Australia. This event showcases the incredible talent of women in various technology industries.

There are currently four categories for people who identify as women in tech [+] in Western Australia:

  • Tech [+] 20 – the 20 nominees who get the highest scores from the judging panel
  • First Among Equals – highest score of all from judging panel
  • Outstanding Youth Role Model – highest who is 25 or younger – does not have to be top 20
  • Outstanding Regional Role Model – highest who is regional – does not have to be top 20
  • People’s Choice – highest number of votes by the people/community

The lack of gender balance is not just a problem for women, so in 2020, WiTWA added a new award to shine a light on their allies. The Outstanding Allyship Award – open to anyone who does not identify as a woman.

If you would like further information on the WiTWA Tech [+] Awards or would like to nominate someone, please visit the WiTWA website.

Program Sponsors

The IAASysters@AusNOG Program is proudly brought to you with the help of our sponsors.

The Internet Association of Australia is pleased to announce that it will transition to a company limited by guarantee.

Members of the Association voted to support the transition at the Special General Meeting held Wednesday 28 July 2021.

This means we will be governed by the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and become a company limited by guarantee. The transition reflects the national growth the Association has undergone over recent years and now represents members across Australia.

A special thank you to all the members that contributed to this process, providing input through our various member consultations and workshops, taking the time to vote and attend the meeting.

IAASysters@AusNOG Project Overview

For many years now AusNOG has held its place as THE go to event on the internet industry calendar, yet sadly year after year we see low participation rates from certain sectors of our industry.

IAASysters@AusNOG is a one-day workshop being held prior to AusNOG. It is based on the international systers.org and systers@ietf programs. Sponsored attendees will attend both the IAASysters@AusNOG workshop and AusNOG itself including travel and accommodation (where necessary).

The workshop will include a presentation skills session, targeting a lightning talk to be given at the end of AusNOG, a career planning session and a training session on a technical topic voted for by the attendees.

Participating in IAASysters@AusNOG

Whether you are good at talking but struggle with the technical aspects of the role; or are trying to navigate a career change and are looking for a community of likeminded people, IAASysters@AusNOG is a great chance to put yourself out there, receive training from experts in the field, as well as the opportunity to network with your peers at one of Australia’s largest internet conferences.

Whilst participation in the program is open to all, the program aims to encourage and support women in the industry. Technology and the Internet is changing the world and we need to cultivate an inclusive industry where women have a role to play and empower them with the confidence and resources to take on these positions.

Sponsored Attendees

Successful applicants chosen to be a sponsored attendee will receive:

  • Ticket to attend IAASysters@AusNOG workshop (5 April)
  • Ticket to attend AusNOG conference – provided by AusNOG (6-7 April)
  • Economy airfares to Sydney and three nights accommodation for interstate participants
  • One-year complimentary Professional membership to IAA (subject to Board approval)

Criteria:

  • Are you an early career internet engineer / technician / product specialist / programmer or re-entering the industry after a career break?
  • Will this be your first time at AusNOG?
  • Are you hoping to have a career in the sector?
  • What do you think is the most satisfying thing about the internet and the internet industry?

Applications are now closed.

We understand that the Covid situation has turned everything topsy turvy. Should the Covid situation prevent us from conducting the IAA Systers program or participating in AusNOG, then we will postpone the event, and all winners will retain the offer of sponsored places.

Another successful online event done and dusted in 2021! Our global panel of experts shared their thoughts and insights on internet regulation and its ability to protect users against cyber-attacks, unlawful access to data, and online content. The discussion also included current legislation pitfalls, the intersection with human rights, helpful insights about what this could all mean for our members, and a simple summation that, “we are trying to regulate nationally, into a global communications network.”

If you weren’t able to make it, we have you covered! All events are livestreamed and can be found on our website, Facebook page and YouTube channels.

We would like to extend our gratitude to our panellists, Patrick Fair, Lucie Krahulcova, Jordan Carter, and Konstantinos Komaitis for taking the time to join us, sharing their valuable expertise and insights – making the event highly valuable and engaging.

We would also like to thank those who attended and provided feedback. Your feedback is valuable to us to ensure we continue to provide events that add value to you and your business.

Congratulations to our lucky door prize winner, Andrew Cox. We hope you enjoy your new IAA mouse mat and masks!
