In February, the IAA team travelled to Petaling Jaya, Malaysia for APRICOT 2025. We’re proud to sponsor this key event for the Asia Pacific internet community.

Our Events & Marketing Manager, Sabrina Chang-Rozario, gave a presentation on IAA’s events initiatives and joined a panel discussion on community outreach.

Tech Team Lead, Aaron Chidiac, was also on the ground, catching up with peers, taking part in technical sessions, and flying the flag for IAA.

We had a fantastic time reconnecting with the community, forging new relationships, and bringing back fresh ideas to share with the team.

We’re proud to support the 2nd annual Data Centre Real Estate Summit – bringing together the big players in tech, real estate, and investment to shape the future of Australia’s data centre landscape.

In September we hosted our fourth annual IAASysters Workshop, followed by two days at the AusNOG conference, to take advantage of industry networking, learn the latest industry trends and receive in-depth technical training.

Thanks again to our awesome sponsors. We couldn’t do this without you!

Here are some pictures highlighting this year’s program.

Planning for IAASysters 2023 is well underway! We’re excited by the program we have in store. This year’s theme ‘Future Heroes of the Internet’ has been chosen to celebrate all the super women we have in our industry. We’re also proud to announce that this year’s conference will be held at Sea World  Resort on the Gold Coast. If you’ve not heard of our Systers program before or just want to know more be sure to check our short video.

The successful participants were selected from a record number of strong applications. The sponsored attendees will enjoy:

  • Ticket to attend the IAASysters Workshop (6 September 2023)
  • Ticket to the AusNOG Conference (7-8 September 2023)
  • Economy airfares to Gold Coast and accommodation
  • One-year complimentary Professional Membership to IAA (subject to board approval)

We could not host such an amazing three-day program  without the generous support of our sponsors. We like to thank this year’s Sponsors including:

Systers 2023 Sponsors

If you would like to support the next generation of women in the Internet industry, it’s not too late to be a part of the Systers program. Head over to the Systers page on our website to find out how to sponsor!

Our hugely popular IAASysters program is back for the third time. IAA launched Systers in 2021 after we noticed consistently low participation rates of certain sectors in our industry. We wanted to do something about it, so we did!

In 2023, the program will offer 10 sponsored attendees the opportunity to attend a one-day workshop that provides expert career advice and builds soft career-advancement skills, followed by attendance at the 2-day AusNOG Conference, being held on the beautiful Gold Coast this year.

If your organisation would like to sponsor this great initiative or you would like to express your interest in applying to become a sponsored attendee, then navigate to the Systers page on our website to find out more.

The IAASysters@AusNOG program finally took place! After being postponed twice last year, we were relieved that it happened in line with AusNOG this year as planned. The workshop was a full day of career planning, presentation and technical skills training delivered by prominent industry professionals. The vibe in the room was incredible, with participants actively engaging in all sessions and getting to know each other.

The feedback from attendees has been excellent, with one participant reporting they took what they learned in the workshop and at the networking opportunities that came from AusNOG, they made new contacts and practised pitching themselves to strangers!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors once again. Thank you, AusNOG, Vocus and Amazon Web Services, for your contributions to this fantastic program and supporting our efforts in supporting women in the Internet industry. If you are interested in opportunities to sponsor this program or would like to nominate a participant, please email events@internet.asn.au for more information. We are currently evaluating the program and considering future options.

We look forward to welcoming the sponsored attendees and Perth based staff attending the inaugural IAASysters@AusNOG program! We’re very excited about this as it’s designed to support women in the Internet industry. Starting with our workshop on Tuesday 5th April, attendees will acquire technical and presentation skills and knowledge, and complete a career planning session to help them navigate their future careers. Prominent industry experts will deliver all three sessions to ensure the attendees get the best guidance and advice.

Attendees will also attend the AusNOG Conference to ensure they maximise their technical learning experience and take advantage of all the great networking opportunities that come from it! So, if you see an IAASysters@AusNOG attendee, please make them feel welcome and accepted – they won’t be hard to spot as they will be the select few wearing the IAASysters@AusNOG t-shirt!

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our valued sponsors who have supported this program. Without the support and generosity of AusNOG, Vocus and Amazon Web Services, this program would not be as enriching as it is, and it’s great to see prominent industry players join us in our effort to cultivate a more inclusive Internet industry.

For more information about this program, please visit the IAASysters@AusNOG information page.

We proudly sponsored the NetThing event this year and hosted a round table, Internet as an Essential Service. Alongside representatives from across the internet industry, civil society and government, we discussed the nature and implications of the internet as an essential service.

The discussion began with participants unpacking the definition of ‘essential service’, with various understandings raised, including a minimum level of guaranteed connectivity, specific data service obligations for internet providers and retailers and consumer safeguard provisions. We then discussed the necessity of broadband services for Australians today, especially in a post-COVID-19 world, and the wider implications for ISPs and RSPs. Overall, it was noted that the definition of essential services varies, and varies from state to state, which in turn changes the conversation, both for industry obligations and consumer rights.

As the roundtable ended, participants shared their perspectives on the importance of regulation throughout this process, especially when addressing market failures and facilitating equity.

We would like to thank all who watched our round table and would like to further extend our thanks to the incredible participants. Your knowledge and insights made the round table constructive, meaningful and interesting.

If you missed out, please head over to the NetThing YouTube channel to catch up. Feel free to jump forward to 2 hours and 30 minutes to our session. Enjoy!

Earlier this month, some of our Admin Team attended the Women in Technology WA (WiTWA) Tech [+] Conference. The event drew a large crowd of women eager to create change for women in the tech industry. They enjoyed the variety of inspiring, motivating and enthusiastic speakers and even had the opportunity to engage in an interactive Lego play session! Starting with a beautiful welcome to country, the day was broken into three parts: digital transformation and disruption, how women will change the tech future, and IQ, EQ and Adversity Quotient.

Thank you, WiTWA, for having us; we look forward to your next fantastic event!
