WiTWA – Tech [+] Awards

Each year Women in Technology WA (WiTWA) hosts the Tech [+] Awards as a way to shine a light on the diversity of women who work in tech roles and organisations in Western Australia. This event showcases the incredible talent of women in various technology industries.

There are currently four categories for people who identify as women in tech [+] in Western Australia:

  • Tech [+] 20 – the 20 nominees who get the highest scores from the judging panel
  • First Among Equals – highest score of all from judging panel
  • Outstanding Youth Role Model – highest who is 25 or younger – does not have to be top 20
  • Outstanding Regional Role Model – highest who is regional – does not have to be top 20
  • People’s Choice – highest number of votes by the people/community

The lack of gender balance is not just a problem for women, so in 2020, WiTWA added a new award to shine a light on their allies. The Outstanding Allyship Award – open to anyone who does not identify as a woman.

The Internet 2021 and Beyond

Measuring Broadband Australia Program

Earlier this year, our Internet Service Provider (ISP) members were granted eligibility to join the ACCC’s broadband monitoring program. Prior to this, only larger ISPs could participate, providing them with a competitive, marketable advantage.

Following our successful appeal to the ACCC, several members have become eligible to join the program, and we encourage our members to do so. This program provides the opportunity for greater internet performance transparency, allowing smaller ISPs to participate actively and be included in the MBA reports. It further enables members to include speed and technical quality in marketing collateral alongside the bigger players.

Scams Awareness Week

This year’s Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) and Scams Awareness Network’s (SAN) Scams Awareness Week will be held the week of 8 – 12 November 2021.

The theme for this year is let’s talk scams, to encourage all Australians to talk about scams with family, friends, and colleagues to raise awareness, educate, and empower consumers to protect themselves.

ACCC’s Scamwatch reported that Australians lost $176.1 million to scams last year, up by 23.1 per cent from 2019. Statistics like these provide a good reminder that scams are ongoing, very active, and are becoming more sophisticated.

Our association is continuing to be a campaign partner of Scams Awareness Week and will provide several resources from the ACCC over the coming months. These resources provide information that you can use to protect yourself and others from falling victim to scams. We encourage all our ISP members to check the content and share it with your customers.

IAASysters

IAASysters@AusNOG Program

This year we are proud to launch our new IAASysters@AusNOG program. This program is based on the international systers.org and systers@IETF programs and offers ten sponsored attendees the opportunity to participate in both the AusNOG conference and our IAASysters@AusNOG workshop.  

As avid sponsors and attendees of the AusNOG conference, we have noticed declining participation rates from certain sectors of our industry in previous years. As our Association has a proud heritage of advocacy and is passionate about cultivating a more inclusive internet industry, we created the IAASysters@AusNOG program to support and enable women to access the valuable technical content and business networking opportunities that come from the AusNOG conference.

SGM Results

The Internet Association of Australia is pleased to announce that it will transition to a company limited by guarantee.

Members of the Association voted to support the transition at the Special General Meeting held Wednesday 28 July 2021.

This means we will be governed by the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and become a company limited by guarantee. The transition reflects the national growth the Association has undergone over recent years and now represents members across Australia.

A special thank you to all the members that contributed to this process, providing input through our various member consultations and workshops, taking the time to vote and attend the meeting.

Farewell Primus DC

IAA has been notified of the upcoming closure of Primus DC, located at 55 King Street, Melbourne.

Vocus has advised us that we need to vacate the premises by 30 September 2021. Unfortunately, this means members with ports within the data centre will be affected as IAA will no longer be able to offer services from this facility after that date.

Rest assured that we are working hard to ensure service continuity despite the closure and request that members with a current service at 55 King Street migrate to any of our other sites on VIC-IX. All location options can be found on our website.

Global Switch Sydney Shared Space Consolidation – 6-month notice

If you have a service in our shared space in Global Switch Sydney, it’s time to be on the move! Notices have been issued to all members who are affected and have been advised that the date for shutdown is Thursday, January 27 2022. If you need to relocate your services, please choose one of our established permanent racks or another alternative location.

Unfortunately, these racks are no longer feasible for us to operate as they are not backed by a contract, are physically shared, and are poorly documented. They are not capable of providing the level of service members expect from us as they are restricted by the multi-tenanted nature of Global Switch, which has caused issues with the design and resilience. Additionally, the switching hardware has also reached the end of life and will not be utilised in future on the IX.

AS10084 Network TLC and Re-architecture

We are happy to announce that Aussie Broadband has delivered two new transit services to IAA. Over the next month, our engineers will be working towards migrating AS10084 to the new paths, and any members affected by the changes will be notified accordingly.

Using the new paths means we can reduce complexity by retiring old hardware and standardise the hardware in use for the AS10084 across Australia.

Once this network is up and running, we plan to increase visibility to our members by providing shiny new, advanced looking glasses – Hyperglass!
