We’re very excited about this as it’s designed to support women in the Internet industry. Starting with our workshop on Tuesday 5th April, attendees will acquire technical and presentation skills and knowledge, and complete a career planning session to help them navigate their future careers. Prominent industry experts will deliver all three sessions to ensure the attendees get the best guidance and advice.   

Attendees will also attend the AusNOG Conference to ensure they maximise their technical learning experience and take advantage of all the great networking opportunities that come from it! Tickets are sold out for the annual AusNOG Conference happening next week! The programme has been released so you can start planning for the sessions you would like to attend. This year, our engineers will be taking part in the RPKI Deployathon, where they will be guided by the facilitators and will discuss/debate and work on properly signing ROAs for your address space, installing and configuring different RPKI validators, connecting routers to the validators, configure infrastructure to implement ROV and more.   

We have a booth again this year, so please stop by for a chat and pick up some swag while you’re there! With a couple of fun things to do at our booth, it should be a nice break for you all between sessions.   

This year’s RPKI Deployathon builds on the previous Deployathons held at APNIC48 (Chiangmai) and APRICOT2020 (Melbourne).  

Event details

This event will be face-to-face guided by facilitators; participants will discuss/debate and work on: 

  • properly signing ROAs for your address space (based on what you announce/accept in BGP);  
  • install and configure different RPKI validators (diff the validated outputs and under the hood defaults?);  
  • connect routers to the validators (multi-vendor infra);  
  • configure infrastructure to implement ROV (to drop or not to drop?). 

Participants will analyse the outcomes of each step and summarise any improvements in operational processes to achieve these outcomes. The summaries/findings of each activity will be presented as a lightning talk at AusNOG (PC and time permitting). 

Participants will work with different validators, including Routinator, FORT, rpki-client, and rpki-prover, with accompanying routing implementations for IOS-XE/XR, JunOS, SR-OS, EOS, and others (BIRD, FRR).

IAASysters@AusNOG Project Overview

For many years now AusNOG has held its place as THE go to event on the internet industry calendar, yet sadly year after year we see low participation rates from certain sectors of our industry.

IAASysters@AusNOG is a one-day workshop being held prior to AusNOG. It is based on the international systers.org and systers@ietf programs. Sponsored attendees will attend both the IAASysters@AusNOG workshop and AusNOG itself including travel and accommodation (where necessary).

The workshop will include a presentation skills session, targeting a lightning talk to be given at the end of AusNOG, a career planning session and a training session on a technical topic voted for by the attendees.

Whether you are good at talking but struggle with the technical aspects of the role; or are trying to navigate a career change and are looking for a community of likeminded people, IAASysters@AusNOG is a great chance to put yourself out there, receive training from experts in the field, as well as the opportunity to network with your peers at one of Australia’s largest internet conferences.

Whilst participation in the program is open to all, the program aims to encourage and support women in the industry. Technology and the Internet are changing the world and we need to cultivate an inclusive industry where women have a role to play and empower them with the confidence and resources to take on these positions.

Kitty Hibble will show how the association grew from a bunch of people with vision, to now being a fundamental – even critical – part of the Internet today and illustrate some of the organisational changes that had to occur to support this evolution.

Although staff were only able to attend events in their hometown, board members did a fantastic job welcoming and taking care of members in our place.

Members in NSW, WA, SA and VIC would have received their invitation to enjoy an afternoon or evening with our board members and staff to celebrate the end of the year. The decision to organise these events was only very recently made, and events in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne have been confirmed and invitations have been sent!

We appreciate that some states are in the early days of recently returned freedoms and are aware that not everyone will be racing to attend in-person events. However, if you would like to attend the event in your state, please head over to our events page for more information.

We proudly sponsored the NetThing event this year and hosted a round table, Internet as an Essential Service. Alongside representatives from across the internet industry, civil society and government, we discussed the nature and implications of the internet as an essential service.

The discussion began with participants unpacking the definition of ‘essential service’, with various understandings raised, including a minimum level of guaranteed connectivity, specific data service obligations for internet providers and retailers and consumer safeguard provisions. We then discussed the necessity of broadband services for Australians today, especially in a post-COVID-19 world, and the wider implications for ISPs and RSPs. Overall, it was noted that the definition of essential services varies, and varies from state to state, which in turn changes the conversation, both for industry obligations and consumer rights.

As the roundtable ended, participants shared their perspectives on the importance of regulation throughout this process, especially when addressing market failures and facilitating equity.

Another virtual AGM this year kicked off with Matthew Enger’s Acknowledgement of Country. The Chair, David Hooton, officially opened the meeting just after 5pm AEDT acknowledging the previous AGM minutes, thanking the staff and the Board for all their hard work and extending a special thanks to Matthew McDonough and Washif Ahmed for their service to the Association.

Deputy Chair, Matthew Enger, provided a quick report of the audited financials and the motion that Crunch Auditing be adopted as the IAA auditors for FY 21-22 passed.

CEO, Narelle Clark, provided an update from the operational staff that looked back over the past year. The report was a testament to what a busy year it has been, providing insights drawn from our IX statistics and finishing off with thoughts for the future.

Returning Officer, Kitty Hibble, announced the nominees and election results for the Board Election, with both Daryl Collins and Richard Thompson being elected for three-year terms and Nate Garr a one-year term.
