We are preparing to refresh our existing fleet of route server hardware. The new servers will use 2 x 10G-LR fibre links to diverse switches in a Layer 2 bonded configuration for improved resilience against planned and unplanned network outages. We look forward to giving you more information on the upcoming works, so stay tuned to our newsletters and socials.

IX Australia’s new out-of-band (OOB) network has officially been commissioned and is now being used in production! Powered by ZPE’s NodeGrid devices and utilising state-of-the-art technologies such as WireGuard VPNs, this solution replaces the original OOB network that was running on end-of-life equipment. The new solution (high-level overview shown below) includes three redundant head-ends with LTE cellular connectivity, including one hosted completely external to our networks. This ensures access to all of our devices in the worst possible events, including those resulting in the direst of outages. The new network has already come in handy with a recent outage involving an OSPF process failure on one of our WA-IX switches – watch out for an upcoming blog post that will discuss this further.

We are excited to introduce Kyle Zrinski, our new PHP Developer. Working with the tech team, he will be a vital contributor to our new IAA Member Portal.

Before joining IAA, Kyle worked as a Desktop IT Support Technician and is currently completing a degree in Information Technology at ECU.

Kyle brings a real passion for software development which is heavily integrated with the Internet, and is excited to move into the Internet industry, seeing it as an exceptional opportunity to learn and grow professionally.

In his spare time, Kyle enjoys tinkering with hobby electronics and 3D printers, designing projects such as smart plant pots and logic puzzles – you may even find him tearing up the racetrack or working on cars!

Across two nights, Equinix SY1 had new equipment installed and the layout of hardware rearranged. This work was necessary as it helps to increase our hardware capacity to keep up with the demand and builds further resiliency into this site. Two of our engineers worked across two nights to complete the job and even managed to take a couple of minutes to record their WA-IX birthday wishes. Thanks for your hard work, team!

During the month of June, we released two independent reports that assess IAA’s contribution and importance to Australia’s Internet. In this report, “The Importance of IXPs in Australia”, Professor Matthew Roughan from the University of Adelaide provides an analysis of the value and importance of IXPs. Using technical and scientific literature, he substantiates the benefits of IXPs, including improving performance, reliability and security. It is an excellent report, as it contains a substantial technical background, a review of the scientific literature on IXPs, and clearly articulates their benefits. We highly recommend adding it to your weekend reading list! Read the full report.

Another month has passed and work on the new portal continues. We’re not far from launch with final internal testing kicking off this month – we want to make sure it’s smooth, user friendly and looks fabulous! Over the next month, keep an eye out on our social media channels for sneak previews of the interface and what you can look forward to.

Closer to the cutover time, you will receive communications from us via email to ensure your transition onto the new portal is as easy as possible. If you haven’t already, please ensure that your details are up to date, so you receive all the information you need.

Remember our announcement in March about our network cracking over 800Gbps? Well, two months on, and with many thanks to our newest content provider and the gaming community in Australia, our network hit a new record of 901Gbps on Wednesday, 11 May. From the moment the caches were live, the traffic started coming in fast, and it was only a matter of time before we reached the 900Gbps club. Watch out, members; 1Tbps is on the horizon and when it’s here, we’re going to celebrate!!

Earlier this month, we racked and stacked a new PKG mirror hosted on NSW-IX. The new mirror is the first of its kind here in Australia and will make a big difference for FreeBSD users in Southeast Asia and Oceania.

FreeBSD is an operating system for a variety of platforms that focuses on features, speed and stability. With its cutting edge features, it offers advanced networking, performance, security and compatibility. Best of all, FreeBSD is free! As a community project, FreeBSD relies on the collaborative work of the community. There are a number of ways in which you can contribute, and to find out more about these, check out the contributing to FreeBSD page.

Earlier this month, we welcomed Steam to the network, and from day one, the peak kept growing, pushing our network to reach a new traffic record of 901Gbps on Wednesday 11 May. The latest addition of Steam caches means that with 440Gbps of caching capacity between Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, our gamers can enjoy increased speeds when downloading new games or updating an old favourite.

Steam caches are opt-in by default, and if you would like to opt-out of these caches, you may do so by using the following communities:

  • 10084:2508 WA STM Opt Out
  • 10084:2518 VIC STM Opt Out
  • 10084:2528 QLD STM Opt Out

If you require any assistance to opt-out, please do not hesitate to contact one of our friendly team members at peering@ix.asn.au
